about

Got together ye ol Crater Boys to sing a spooky tune about Black Mountain down at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. If you know, you know - you know?

lyrics

THE ROAD TO BLACK MOUNTAIN
Walking over the from 4x4 road’s end
Through pass between black and bear mountains
She was coming for to see her lover

Had it been 2 days or 200 years
There’s the stretch of time vs how it feels
As she stepped over the threshold to the valley

There’s nothing quite like the morning light
As its shining down through the pines
With just a hint of smoke coming up from the woodstove

Following the scent along the breeze
And the sound of men working by the creek
She came into the trap camp just in time for breakfast

[not a light
But the fire
Set in time
Long ago
Stay as long
As you like
But you ain’t ever
Going home]

Seems almost a trap she fell in
Fell in love with a man at Black Mountain
But she hardly noticed all day grinnin while she labored

There comes a simple joy from simple work
Getting water from the creek and mending shirts
And the rabbit that they trapped was done on time for supper

[chorus]

He walked her down to the creek just before sunset
There was one small thing he hadn’t told her yet
Of the curse that fell on anyone who stayed till mornin

Sure he loved his life at the black mountain camp
Set back in time with a few good friends
But he never could leave again if he wanted

[chorus]

Gathering up her things in the dark
She hiked to the road’s end where the truck was parked
But she couldn’t tear her heart away from her lover

Passin once again the threshold to the vale
She watched in awe as her modern gear began to fade
And the dress hung low and she thought the look became her

[chorus]

It’s been 17 years on the other side
All her family assumed she died
On the trail at the end of the road to Black Mountain
